A Nice Little Detour: Jesus First Miracle

The Wedding Feast at Kana and the miraculous change of Water into Wine is commemorated by Catholics at the little village of Kafr Kana (there is another village that competes for recognition as the "real Cana"). It was part of our itinerary for Monday, but we blinked and drove right through it. So we stopped there on Tuesday. And there was a wedding rehearsal going on - how fun. This beautiful little Church is associated with weddings and the sacrament of marriage since it was at a wedding feast that Jesus completed his first "sign" in John 2.
I took a few minutes in this Church to pray for all my married friends. I especially asked the intercession of the Blessed Mother - who interceded on behalf of her hosts in the John 2 story - and asked for her blessing on married couples. I said two extra prayers: one for the couples who have given me the privilege of being a part of their marriage preparations and weddings, and then a special prayer for Anthony Cali and Sarah Grainger, whose wedding I will celebrate on August 15.
I was also amused to find out that souvenir stands around Cana do quite a business as wine merchants, selling wine made in Israel with Cana commemorative labels - of course I bought some! I asked the merchant if it had been water when he bottled it - he said no, but that he had tried to sell bottled water as "potential wine" in the past but it had not worked. :) God bless my married friends and family!
